The Blood of Faith: A Miraculous Mass in Medieval Spain
The Miracle Unveiled
During the celebration of the Mass, a priest witnessed a miraculous event: numerous drops of Blood fell from the consecrated Host. This miracle profoundly strengthened the faith of the priest and many of the faithful, including the King of Castile. Numerous documents testify to this miracle, and the relics of this marvel were exhibited for veneration during the Eucharistic Congress of Toledo in 1926. Even today, these relics inspire deep devotion among the Spanish people.
Venerable Don Pedro Cabañuelas and the Precious Relics In the sanctuary of Guadalupe, the precious relics of the Corporal and the bloodied pall used during the miraculous Mass are still venerated. The pall, a small rigid linen cloth of square shape used to cover the chalice and paten, was used by Venerable Don Pedro Cabañuelas, a priest from the region of Toledo. Renowned for his deep devotion to the Holy Eucharist, Don Pedro spent many hours in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament, both day and night.
The Trial of Faith
In 1420, Don Pedro experienced a severe temptation to doubt the reality of transubstantiation. Despite his daily devotion, he struggled with these doubts. One day, as he began to celebrate the Holy Mass, a dense cloud descended from above and settled over the altar, obscuring his vision. Desperate, he implored the Lord to dispel his doubts. Slowly, the cloud began to dissipate, revealing an astonishing sight: the Host was lifted above the chalice, and abundant drops of Blood began to fall, replenishing the chalice and overflowing onto the corporal and the pall. At that moment, the priest heard a voice saying, "End the Holy Mass, and for the moment reveal to no one what you saw."
The Miracle's Legacy
News of the miracle eventually spread throughout Spain, reaching King Juan II of Castile and Queen Maria of Aragon. So moved by the event, they requested to be buried near the body of Venerable Father Pedro Cabañuelas, demonstrating their deep devotion to the miraculous occurrence.
Continuing Devotion
The story of Don Pedro Cabañuelas and the miraculous Mass remains a testament to the power of faith and the Holy Eucharist. The relics associated with this event continue to be a focal point of devotion, inspiring the faithful with their profound significance.
