Historical Background

In 1649, a miraculous event occurred in the Peruvian town of Port Eten. During the exposition of a Host for public adoration, witnesses saw the appearance of the Child Jesus and three interconnected hearts, glowing with a brilliant white color. This event is commemorated annually with a feast that begins on July 12, involving the transfer of the Miraculous Host from its Sanctuary to the church in the City of Eten, and concludes on July 24.

The First Apparition

The first apparition took place on the night of June 2, 1649, during Vespers and the solemn exposition in honor of the feast of Corpus Christi. As the Franciscan monk Jerome de Silva Manrique was about to return the monstrance to the tabernacle, he was stopped by a vision. In the Host, the brilliant face of a child, framed by thick brown curls falling to his shoulders, appeared. All the faithful present in the church shared in this miraculous vision.

The Second Apparition

A few days later, on July 22, during the celebrations in honor of St. Mary Magdalene, the patroness of the city, a second apparition occurred. According to Brother Marco Lopez, superior of the convent in Chiclayo, during the exposition of the Most Holy Sacrament, the Divine Child Jesus appeared again in the Host, dressed in a purple tunic. Beneath it, He wore a shirt that reached the middle of His chest, in the style of the South American Indians. This attire was a sign of His identification with the Mochican inhabitants of Eten, demonstrating His love for them.

During this apparition, which lasted about 15 minutes, many witnesses also saw three small white hearts, united among themselves, appear in the Host. These hearts symbolized the Three Persons of the Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, present in the consecrated Host.

Ongoing Devotion

To this day, the feast in honor of the Miracle of the Divine Child of Eten continues to attract thousands of faithful each year. The event serves as a profound reminder of the deep love and connection between the Divine and the faithful inhabitants of Eten.
