The Vision of Blessed Angela of Foligno
Blessed Angela of Foligno, a renowned Italian mystic of the 13th century, experienced profound spiritual visions throughout her life. One such vision occurred during Mass, leaving a lasting impact on her spiritual journey.
Angela recounted the event, saying, "On one occasion, I saw Christ under the guise of a small child, who nevertheless appeared great and majestic, like a king. It seemed that, seated on His throne, He held in His hand something like a symbol of authority." This vision occurred while the priest was raising the Host during the consecration. Despite the others kneeling, Angela was so enraptured by the sight that she either ran up close to the altar or was unable to move due to sheer delight and contemplation.
Reflecting on the experience, Angela expressed regret, "I experienced great regret that the priest put the Host back on the altar so quickly." This moment of divine encounter highlights her deep devotion and the intense spiritual ecstasies she often experienced.
Angela of Foligno's mystical experiences, including this vision, have been documented and revered within the Christian tradition, emphasizing the profound connections between the faithful and the divine during the Eucharist.
