Flames Vanished: The Miraculous Power of the Blessed Sacrament in Dronero

In 1631, a fire ignited by a young farm girl spread rapidly through Dronero, defying all efforts to control it. Amid the chaos, Capuchin friar Maurice da Ceva led a procession with the Blessed Sacrament from the Church of St. Brigid to the heart of the blaze. Miraculously, the fire subsided upon the arrival of the Blessed Sacrament. This divine intervention is commemorated annually on the Feast of Corpus Christi, celebrating the faith that saved the town.
The Incident

On the afternoon of Sunday, early August 1631, a devastating fire broke out in the commercial district of Saluzzo in the town of Dronero. The blaze was sparked by a young farm girl who foolishly kindled a fire with dry hay just as a strong wind was developing into a thunderstorm. The flames quickly spread to the home of Borgo Maira, and despite the townspeople's desperate efforts, the fire continued to rage uncontrollably.

Divine Intervention

Friar Maurice da Ceva, a Capuchin, was inspired by his great love for the Blessed Sacrament. He organized a procession with the Blessed Sacrament, carrying the monstrance containing the large Host from the Church of St. Brigid. As he and the townspeople approached the raging flames, the fire miraculously subsided and was extinguished immediately upon the arrival of the Blessed Sacrament.

Commemoration

This miraculous event is detailed on a stone tablet in the small Church of St. Brigid. To this day, the citizens of Dronero commemorate the miracle with a solemn annual procession with the Blessed Sacrament on the Feast of Corpus Christi, keeping alive the memory of the divine intervention that saved their town.
